Alpha Epsilon Phi is a national panhellenic sorority, founded in 1909 by seven Jewish women, dedicated to helping women become the best they can be. We prize individuality, encouraging each member to discover and develop the talents and abilities that make her unique.
But just as we value individuality, we also prize togetherness, fostering friendships and a sense of belonging that lasts a lifetime. When you're an AEPhi, you'll find there's always a sister to laugh when you laugh, listen when you talk, to lend a hand, and to be there for you.
Once upon a time...
Alpha Epsilon Phi was founded by seven Jewish women at Barnard College in New York on October 24, 1909. Helen Phillips, Ida Beck, Rose Gerstein, Augustina "Tina" Hess, Lee Reiss, Rose Salmowitz and Stella Strauss had a dream of forming a sorority where exceptional women of all backgrounds, religions, interests and varying beliefs would be welcomed with open arms. This sorority would endeavor to foster lifelong friendship and sisterhood, academics, social involvement and community service, all the while providing a home away from home for its members.
"It was her [Helen Phillips] idea and her persistence more than anything else that brought Alpha Epsilon Phi into existence," one founder wrote. "I sometimes think that some of those ties were more necessary to Helen than to the others in this group because Helen had no mother and no sisters or brothers, and to her a group of adopted sisters was more of a need and had more significance."
The dream that was born in a dorm room at Barnard College in 1909 continues to succeed, prosper and thrive on over 50 college and university campuses nationwide. Alpha Epsilon Phi welcomes hundreds of new members with open arms each year and seeks not only to live up to the ideals and goals of its original founders, but also to exceed them.

We are Alpha Epsilon Phi - Phi Chapter, founded at UCLA on December 27, 1924. Phi Chapter is proud to say that Alpha Epsilon Phi still holds the founding values paramount to all others. These values are the basis of the pride that one takes in referring to fellow members of the organization as "sisters", indicating to family, friends, and strangers alike the pride that we have in being a "Phi".
Phis pride themselves in being multi-dimensional women who want to get out and not only see the world, but also give back. We are unique individuals, but together we make Phi Chapter a whole.
I never imagined I would ever be a part of a sorority until I met the girls of AEPhi. Joining has been one of the most life-changing experiences of my life. You dont just make friends at AEPhi, you create life-long relationships with your sisters and sorority doesn't get any better than that. AEPhi is my new family, my home away from home and I am lucky to be a part of something so inspirational. "Un ami, c'est quelqu'un qui vous connait bien et qui vous aime quand meme." - Megan Howe
I joined AEPhi because coming to UCLA as a freshman I was nervous about making friends so I went through recruitment to help me with that. I came to AEPhi and I felt at home. I spoke with the same girl all through recruitment and she told me all the amazing things this chapter does. Now that I am a part of AEPhi, it has changed me in so many ways. I am now more confident in myself and AEPhi has allowed me to grow into the woman I've always wanted to become thanks to the love and support of all my sisters here. -Mary Raymond, President
Carnival For A Cure
The ladies of Alpha Epsilon Phi have teamed up with the men from Phi Delta Theta to host a carnival filled with fun and games to benefit each organiations' national philanthropies.
Alpha Epsilon Phi encourages its members to be active in all types of community service and philanthropic activities. The national organization has two official philanthropies: the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation and Sharsheret.
The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF) was founded by Elizabeth Glaser (an Alpha Epsilon Phi at the University of Wisconsin, Sigma Chapter) and two of her close friends in 1988. The goal of the organization is to educate people on the special issues concerning children with the AIDS virus. Alpha Epsilon Phi is proud to be able to support such a worthy cause through the efforts of its members.
The women of Alpha Epsilon Phi have chosen Sharsheret, a breast cancer networking support group as a means to help women coping with their diagnosis as a second national philanthropy. Cancer is not only a physical battle, but it becomes an emotional one as well. Enduring so much physical pain brings emotional stress to many women and their families and Sharsheret is a network that provides these women a place to get help and support. Sharsheret offers a shoulder to cry on, an advice hotline, and a safe space where women can turn in their time of need.
Alpha Epsilon Phi also has a strong connection with UCLA Dance Marathon, a fundraiser to support EGPAF. Dance Marathon was started at UCLA with the help of one of our sisters, Jenny Wood (UCLA class of '05). Our house is also extremely dedicated to Colleges Against Cancer holding chair positions on the Relay For Life Committee. Each year many of our members help organize, run, and participate in Relay For Life which raises money for the American Cancer Society.
